Hand to hand. In asking Sara Tan to take over her solo Vertèbre, more than a dance choreographer Michèle Noiret transmits a whole world. It’s a rare and generous gesture."
Dance and the test of time. Created in 1989 by the choreographer, Vertèbre is a virtuosic piece that she now transmits to the young Sara Tan. (...) The question was raised about the passage of time, about the transmission. How do you revive a solo that has often been specially put together for a performer? Looking at the result, you understand that three ingredients are essential: first a strong piece that withstands the passage of time through its originality, its vocabulary, its construction. Then, a new performer flying high, able to make it hers and get it glowing white-hot, as if it is born every evening in front of us. That is clearly the case with Sara Tan. Lastly, to permit this appropriation, a space of freedom, allowing the performer to feel at ease and to bring her own creativity to everything. Here again, Michèle Noiret has understood this well, never trying for an identical remake, but rather to recreate the piece based on the performer’s personality. With the first few seconds, the audience is seized by the music of Youssef Yancy and Todor Todoroff and the slow transformation of a woman stuck in her cocoon to a creature flying with her own wings."
The beauty of metamorphosis. It is one of Michèle Noiret’s “founding” solos, dating from 1989, thirty years and it has not aged a bit. With the pleasure of the transmission, she tells us during the intermission. A huge bond is created between her and her performer Sara Tan, originally from Singapore and trained at PARTS, on the theme of metamorphosis (from insect to woman and vice versa) and the unsteady balance of the body resting on a chair. We watch a double performance, the incredibly fast and precise rhythm of a body that “flaps its wings” and the transformation from a confused insect to an erotised woman who reveals her hidden beauty. It’s great to hear that Michèle Noiret has adopted her performer for her new creations. This “recreation” is magical.”
«Vertèbre», created and danced in 1989, 29 years ago, will be performed by Sara Tan. “I wanted this transmission in the form of an exchange. By sharing my expertise, my personal experiences as a researcher, performer and choreographer, I also convey an era, a story,” Michèle Noiret says. “The solo is a form in which the invention of language is very personal. It’s not just about describing movements in order to convey them. It’s indispensable to find the internal dynamism of all the processes that one has brought into play, to find the origin of the states of body, intentions. A work that entails movement as much as words. I am transmitting this solo to Sara, a young dancer with a strong, singular personality, curious, perceptive, sensitive and reacting to every detail. It’s what made me want to retain only half of the solo and to reinvent the other half with her. Giving each other the time to improvise, like I did with Liza Penkova in «DÉSIRS» and with David Drouard in the « Palimpseste » duo, is a form of resistance. Whether for transmission or a creation, taking the time, whatever it costs, becomes almost a political act, running counter to an era in which everything has to be fast, consumable and profitable.»
Strange metamorphosis. Béjart in his Mudra school, then the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen are the first milestones of the life of the dancer Michèle Noiret, who formed her own company in 1986. Thirty years after its creation, the choreographer transmits her solo "Vertèbre" to Sara Tan - some parts revived and reproduced, others created anew by the new performer. A black silhouette, clinging upside down to a chair, explores her own transformation before taking flight, overcoming the tumult of the world and its mood."
